Meanings -Expressions-Review (অর্থ- প্রকাশ-পর্যালোচনা)

a. First Language : কোন ব্যক্তির মাতৃভাষাকে বলা হয় First Language. এ ভাষা হয় সাধারনত Natural প্রাকৃতিক এবং spontaneous (স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত)। তেমনি কোনো দেশে বহুল ব্যবহৃত প্রধান ভাষাকে First Language বলে।  

b. Lingua Franca : A shared language of communication used between people whose main languages are different

অর্থাৎ বিভিন্ন ভাষাভাষী জনগোষ্ঠী একত্রিত হলে তাদের মাঝে ভাবের আদান প্রদানের জন্য যে Common language ব্যবহার হয় তাকে Lingua Franca বলে।

c. First Aid : Simple medical treatment that is given to somebody before a doctor comes or before the person is taken to a hospital.

অর্থাৎ ডাক্তার দেখানোর পূর্বে যে অল্প চিকিৎসা দেয়া হয় তাকেই First Aid বলে।

d. Dilly Daily: টালবাহানা  করে সময় নষ্ট করাকে Dilly Dally বলে। যেমন বলা যায় — The government is following dilly dally policy.

e. Bill of fare :  কোন রেস্তোরায় যে সব খাবার পাওয়া যায়, মূল্যসহ ঐ খাবার সমূহের তালিকাকে Bill of fare বলে।

f. Three score : Score এর সাধারন অর্থ হচ্ছে পয়েন্ট বা সংখ্যা। score এর অন্য যে অর্থ আছে তা হচ্ছে 20. সুতরাং three score অর্থ 3 x 20 = 60

g. Bottom line : কোন কিছুর গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশকে bottom line বলে।

h. Boot Leg : Made and sold illegally (অর্থাৎ,  কোন কিছু অবৈধভাবে বিক্রি /পাচার করাকে boot leg বলে।

i. Bull Market : A period during which share prices are rising and people are buying shares— যে সময়ে শেয়ার বাজারে শেয়ারের দাম হঠাৎ করে বেড়ে যায় এবং মানুষ বেশি বেশি শেয়ার কিনতে থাকে সেই সময়কে Bull Market বলে।

j. Blue Chip : an investment thought to be safe and likely to make a profit. মুনাফা লাভের সম্ভাবনা আছে এমন নিরাপদ বিনিয়োগকে blue chip বলে।

k. 'Who would have thought Shylock was so unkind' expresses- wonder বা বিস্ময়

l. 'One day women will have what has so long been denied them leisure, money and room to themselves'. -Space অর্থে Room ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।

m. He raised his eyebrow at my explanation. -show surprise or disapproval

n. Beggars description - it cannot be described in words

o. To read between the lines – অব্যক্ত অর্থ আবিষ্কার করা-to grasp the hidden meaning

p. a quarter to nine-8-45: -১৫ মিনিট বাকী

q. An exciting and interesting time- a whale of a time -অত্যন্ত সুসময়।

r. Once in a blue moon — কদাচিৎ অর্থাৎ rarely.

s. Expire – মেয়াদ শেষ হওয়া। cease to be effective 

t. "Excuse me, gentlemen!" —'Excuse me' is used to draw attention-excuse me - সাধারণত politely কারো মনোযোগ আকর্ষণ করতে ব্যবহার করা হয়। 

u. "Come on and be my friend", is a/an invitation -আস এবং আমার বন্ধু হও, Invitation বা আমন্ত্রণ বুঝায়

v. Bottom line— কোন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ঘটনা/ বিষয়- The essential point

w. 'He wasn't a writer originally', means not a creative writer -বুঝায় যে, সে কোনও সৃজনশীল লেখক নয়।

x. To raise one's brows shows surprise - আশ্চর্য হওয়া, বিস্মিত হওয়া
