PREPOSITIONS OF DIRECTION

	Prepositions of Direction (to, towards, into, at, for, of, from, against, along, across, before, behind, beside, after etc.)

'To' is used to indicate movement from one place to another.

Examples
	I go to gym everyday.
	I'm going to school.

TOWARDS

'Towards' shows the direction.

Examples
	Birds fly back towards their nests by evening.
	The flowers turn toward(s) the sun.

INTO

'Into' shows entrance in other enclosure/ medium/ area.

Examples
	He left the job and went into business.
	He jumped into the well.
	He went into the room/compartment/bogie.

'At' indicates aim/target.

Examples
	He is aiming at IIM/ USA etc.
	The conference will be at the Taj Hotel.

FOR

'For' denotes direction.

Examples
	I will leave for Bombay tomorrow.
	We will leave for Singapore tonight.

OFF

'Off' denotes separation.

Examples
	He was thrown out off the job/car/train.
	The examination was called off due to heavy rain.

FROM

'From' shows point & departure / starting point.

Examples
	We feel sad when loved ones separate from us.
	She came form Bombay / UK / USA / Canada.

AGAINST

'Against' indicates pressure / opposition/ resistance.

Examples
	It is difficult to swim against the tide.
	The opposition is against their plans to build a new building.

Along

'Along' shows getting well with / among.

Examples
	I am happy along my friends.
	There is no stop sign along the two-lane road.

ACROSS

'Across' means from one side to another.

Examples
	She came across the road.
	My house is across the street.

BEFORE

'Before' indicates face to face / facing to and sequence.

Examples
	I was before the judge.
	I came before you arrived.

BEHIND

'Behind' shows at the back of someone / something.

Examples
	I was standing behind my mother.
	The school is behind the temple.

BESIDE

'Beside' indicates by the side of.

Examples
	The garden is beside the school.
	Come and sit beside me.

AFTER

'After' shows sequence of.

Examples
	Karnavati express leaves after Rajdhani express.
	The cat ran after the dog.

Prepositions of direction give readers a sense of place or location. The following chart lists different prepositions of direction, their definitions, and examples.

toward	in the direction of	The man started walking toward the exit.
up	from low to high	The store is right up the road.
down	from high to low	The boy tumbled down the hill.
between	in the space separating two things	The ring fell between the couch cushions.
by	near	The thrift store is by the church.
inside/in	within	Have you ever been inside an abandoned building?
near	close by	The movie theater is by the interstate.
next to	beside	The library is next to the post office.
on	touching something	Put the mail on the table.
onto	moving on top of something	The dog climbed onto the bed.
off	away from	Don’t jump off that wall.
past	on the farther side of	She drove right past the house.
under	below something	The cat slept under the bed.

Some prepositions are trickier than others. For example, it’s not so logical to be on a bus or a train or a plane rather than in one, yet that’s the way we say it. While you are on the plane (i.e., inside the plane), there is also a logo on the plane, and two wings on the plane, though they’re not inside with you. When in doubt about how to use a specific preposition, look up the proper term in a dictionary.
